The Client

A major Financial Services business also providing a wide range of insurance services.

The Challenge

Most UK life insurance sales are made through comparison web portals. If a product provider does not meet minimum response times they are effectively out of the market. Tests had identified quote performance issues with a new offering which put the launch at risk. After initial investigation, a multi-component and complex shared architecture (from several 3rd parties) required changes, necessitating co-ordination between the vendors.

The Work

Differentis was engaged to provide Programme Management and Solution Architecture services to assist the Client with the re-launch of their Protection offering.


  • Identified and delivered tactical changes to the solution in order to meet the minimum performance requirements to go live on the market leading portal (needed for launch)
  • Specified and delivered a roadmap of changes addressing all parts of a complex architecture
  • Managed the expectations of senior internal and external business stakeholders during the delivery of this roadmap.


The eventual solution provided sub-second responses 24x7x365 with transaction volumes exceeding 20,000 quotes per hour. The cumulative effect of the changes was a thirtyfold reduction in response times at the same time as a tenfold increase in transaction volumes.

This took the company from being one of the least reliable, worst performing providers to one of the most reliable, best performing ones.
